Famous Belgians
It’s a bit of a game, really. Belgium has been unfairly described as “A small, dull country with nothing to commend it and nobody famous ever came from there”. In the former case we know full well about some fantastic food and drink - not forgetting chocolate, of course - but what about the latter? Can you name 10 famous Belgians?
Belgium has given us stars of the silver screen such as the obvious Jean-Claude van Damme (aka the “Muscles From Brussels”) and the maybe less obvious Audrey Hepburn, whose birth name was Edda van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston.
The music world has benefited from the likes of Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone, and guitarist Django Reinhardt. Also in the world of music, though how much of a benefit he has been is debatable, is Plastic Bertrand who delivered that classic 1980’s ditty 'Ça Plane Pour Moi'.
The world of sport is not without its Belgian luminaries, which include tennis stars Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin-Hardenne, as well as five times winner of the Tour de France Eddy Merckx.
And the world of art has been enhanced by the works of baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens and surrealist painter Rene Magritte.
That’s 10 already, without the need to even mention Herge (aka Georges Remi), the creator of arguably the best-known Belgian in the world: TinTin.
